The regular
August meeting of the Baucom Elementary PTA Board was called to order on
Tuesday, August 24, 2004 at 6:20 p.m. at A.V. Baucom Elementary School. Dee Connors, president, presided. Minutes from the June meeting were approved
as written.

Lalicker, Kristin McClure, Bev Mosser, Laurie Williams, Wendy Hall, Lisa
Bernhardt, Melissa Reed, Evelyn Larson, Laura Godshall, Lisa Ward, Cindy
Holmes, Rebecca Reece, Carolyn Sink, Jean Morgan, Mindy Nastazi, Angela
Padgett, Lib McGowan, Kelli Coley, Sheila Morin, Stacey Poole, Paige Hutto,
Lila Killensworth, Brenda LaCorte, Allyson Banas, Crickett Gibbons.
President’s
Report.
Teachers’
thank you notes were passed around for all to read. Co-chairs still needed for some committees but all chairs are
filled with the exception of Reflections.
Reminder to all board members to check your mailbox in the PTA
closet. Please address all homeward
bound material to ‘parents or guardians of…’ instead of just mom and/or
dad. Final word on school sign is
‘no’. Town ordinance prohibits
changeable signs. Board is looking for
suggestions on how to spend $4500 earmarked for this gift. This will be revisited at the next PTA
meeting. Some teacher suggestions: Mrs.
Fernandez presented request for walkie-talkies for each grade level for use on
the playground. Mindy Nastazi offered
to look into this. Baucom is providing
palm pilots for one grade level and Mrs. Reynolds requested the PTA fund palm
pilots for another grade. This supports
the county’s change in the way teachers will input their computer data. Sign up sheet for volunteers for both
curriculum nights was passed.
Volunteers also needed to man tables at BJ’s partnership kickoff party
August 26. Dee motioned to move the
starting time for PTA meetings back to 6:00.
Motion was seconded.
Treasurer’s
Report
A copy of
the proposed budget and current income and expense summary was
distributed. Changes brought to the
board’s attention: decrease membership expense by $500 (no calendar magnets purchased
this year), increase Baucom Bookworm expenses by $200 (to replenish supplies),
decrease spring bookfair by $500. Dee
Connors made motion to approve changes to the proposed budget. Motion was
seconded. Revised budget will be posted
to the website and will be voted on by general membership at both curriculum
nights.
Principal’s
Report:
Mrs.
Reynolds reports
that new elementary schools, Highcroft and Turner Creek, have decreased our
enrollment. Achievement level is 96.7%
at level 3 or 4. Would like to
encourage children to stretch and increase their reading. Laura Godshall reported that Baucom’s
homepage has links to helpful literary sites including accelerated reader. Suggestion was made to publicize web links
more to parents. Curriculum nights, 9/1
& 9/2, will focus on standards based grading system and standards based
math trailblazers. Future math nights
are in planning for October to further explain math trailblazers. School will be open at 6:00 on both
curriculum nights for volunteer registering.
Teacher
Advisors:
Jennifer
Fernandez: Information for AV TV needs to be
received one day in advance to plan program.
4th grade math teachers are asking for volunteers cut paper
manipulatives for their math trailblazers curriculum. They would need items completed 1 full week before their use in
the classroom. Lisa Bernhardt will
compile list of volunteers for teachers to contact.
Jeanne
Morgan: Thank you for PTA continuing support.
Cindy
Holmes: Baucom’s website has a link to “Be a Buddy”
which is a list of opportunities to support the school. Information here includes: GM box tops,
Campbell labels, shopping sponsors, employer matching funds. Contact Cindy at cholmes@wcpss.net to make additions to the
list.
Committee
Reports:
Character
Education: The
character wall, new this year, is a way to target more children for reward for
character trait demonstration. Each
noticed trait will be rewarded with a brick with the child’s name on it. A model school will be built with the
bricks. With this program in place in
addition to the regular character-ed awards the monthly breakfast has been
discontinued.
Volunteers:
Lisa Bernhardt reported on new volunteer screening required by all
schools and fielded questions.
Registration must be done on the school intranet and it must be done
every year. All parents are encouraged
to register. Computers will be
available on both curriculum nights or anytime in the media center. Reminder to all committee chairs to make
contact with each volunteer even if you don’t use them.
Cultural
Arts: Laura, Sheila and Mary Sue attended
a cultural arts showcase at Wakefield H.S. and reported on the activities they
hope to plan for this year. A grant is
available from the United Arts Council to supplement their PTA funds.
Membership:
To date: 40 staff members, 327 parent
members.
