A.V. Baucom Elementary School PTA Board Meeting

 

September 21, 2004

 

The regular September meeting of the Baucom Elementary PTA Board was called to order on Tuesday, September 21, 2004 at 6:07 p.m. at A.V. Baucom Elementary School.  Dee Conners, president, presided.  Minutes from the August meeting were approved as written. 

 

Attending were:  Cheryl Koch, Jennifer Fernandez, Jeanne Morgan, Marcia Brower, Julie Duckworth, Bev Mosser, Dee Conners, Julie Monsees, Sheila Morin, Lisa Bernhardt, Nancy Keim, Carolyn Sink, Linda Reynolds, Joann Rivera, Nada Sakher, Kristin McClure, Karleana Raynor, Carol Lalicker, Melissa Reed, Kim Bunce, Lib McGowan, Allyson Banas, Betsy Bailey, Mary Sue Rigano, Laurie Colwell. 

 

President’s Report

Dee announced that Julie Duckworth will replace Melissa Reed as PTA treasurer.  PTA is trying to plan parent workshops but PTA meeting nights are already scheduled with other activities.  E-mail suggestions regarding alternate times for these workshops.  Regarding last year’s$4500 gift to the school: Carol Lalicker motioned to spend $1500 for 6 walkie-talkies for the playground and was seconded by Jean Morgan.  In addition, Dee motioned to earmark $1500 of gift funds for computers for the school and was seconded by Lib McGowan. Thanks to those who helped with the BJ’s kickoff.  Baucom received $275 from new applications and $38 in sundae donations.  Carol Lalicker volunteered to look into organizing a Jelly Beans spirit night.  Welcome to Lori Colwell – field day co-chair, Betsy Bailey – SIP and Silent Auction.

 

Treasurer’s Report

An updated income and expense statement was distributed.  Melissa regrets having to step down as PTA treasurer and thanked the board for helping to replace her so quickly. 

 

Principal’s Report: 

Mrs. Reynolds reported on advisory meeting and summarized Wake County’s strategies to accomplish Goal 2008.  Parents are invited to attend Great Expectations.  Among topics to be discussed will be ways to deal with growth in our area.

Joanne Rivera spoke about student population diversity and asked PTA to help with ways to increase ESL family involvement at school.  Her suggestions include a special welcome to ESL families at reading literacy night with refreshments provided by PTA.  Ideas will be contemplated and revisited at future PTA meeting.

Jeanne Morgan reports that International Night will be held on 3/15/05.  They would like to have more parent involvement.  A sign up sheet was passed for planning committee.

Carolyn Sink expressed thanks for help with the hurricane relief fund drive.  Progress Energy has matched the funds collected by Baucom.  Also, there is a need for donations of new underwear for classroom accidents.

 

Committee Reports:

Apex Ed Foundation – Lib McGowan announced important dates to remember: school board meeting on 10/5 at 4:00 – plan to vote on solutions to school over crowding (come early to sign in if you wish to speak), and the first of the Community Engagement meetings will be held at Green Hope H. S. on 10/14 at 7:00 p.m.

Newsletter – deadline is 9/30

Volunteers – Nancy Keim won the drawing for volunteer of the month

Membership – 477 student families, 65 teachers

Directories – Goal to have directories distributed before the end of September has been met!  They will go home in the 9/28 Tuesday folders.

Fall Sale – Sales fell short of budget projections (32,000 compared to 40,000 budget) but donations far exceeded expectations (3600 compared to 800 budget).  Estimate 56% participation.  Volunteers needed for 6 stations at Jump Party.

Tutor/Mentor – Co-chair still needed.  Only 6 tutors volunteered to date.  Advertisements will be place in newspapers and senior citizen locations.  Apex High School Peer Discovery students are also available. 

Cultural Arts – Symphony and Ballet ticket order forms have been sent home.  $850 United Arts Council grant has been received.
