A.V. Baucom Elementary School PTA Board Meeting

February 19, 2005

The regular February meeting of the Baucom Elementary PTA Board was called to order on Tuesday, February 15, 2005 at 6:04 p.m. at A.V. Baucom Elementary School. Dee Conners, president, presided. Minutes from the January meeting were approved as written.

Attending were: Kristin McClure, Lisa Ward, Laurie Williams, Robin Johnston, Barbara Williams, Carolyn Sink, Karleana Raynor, Lib McGowan, Jennifer Devarnne, Linda Reynolds, Dee Connors, Cindy Holmes, Nada Sakher, Stephanie Chase, Cheryl Koch.

Treasurer’s Report, Dee Connors:

• Updated income and expense statement distributed.
• Mrs. Cronk has requested additional funds over budget from Health and Safety for her Feet program. Dee’s motion to approve additional funds for this year was seconded and approved. Increased amount will be included in next year’s budget.

Principal’s Report, Linda Reynolds:

• Smoothie machine in cafeteria is on trial basis. Feedback is requested. If feedback is positive, the machine will stay. Nutritional information was passed around.
• Baucom’s proposed school improvement plan was passed out and summarized. It addresses Wake County’s goal of 95% of students in grades 3 – 12 being at or above grade level by 2008.
• Carolyn Sink –
• Students are preparing for writing test on March 1.
• Workshop by Dr. Katharine Leslie is scheduled for March 9. Posters hanging around campus were made by Olive Chapel Elementary.
• Tsunami relief is up to $1332.

PTA/Teacher Liaison, Jeanne Morgan:

• Thank you from teachers for random acts of kindness.
• Thanks to Nada Sakher for work on International Night. Nada reported that there is still a need for craft activities.
• Coins for cancer is up to $2100. Since we are over $1000 Baucom’s name will be on the Relay for Life shirts that the participants wear.

President’s Report, Dee Connors:

• Thank you cards from staff were passed.
• Thank you to all who helped with kindergarten registration and the smoothie machine.
• Nominating committee is still looking to fill the Secretary position for next year’s board. Interested persons can contact the current secretary, Cheryl Koch, to learn more about the position.
• Waiting on final approval from Apex grounds committee to pave the walking trail. This would use last year’s school gift money.
• Reminder: Robert San Souci, visiting author, will be at Baucom on 3/10.

Committee Reports:

Awards, Brenda LaCorte: Continuing to accept nominations for PTA awards. Suggested teachers consider nominating, too. They may be in the position to see, first hand, an individual deserving of an award.

Silent Auction, Barbara Williams: Volunteers needed for basket assembly in 2 hour shifts. 30 -40 baskets have been completed to date. Joanne Supply has stepped up to co-chair committee. Business donations have been cataloged – list was passed around and will be available at the auction.

Box tops, Stephanie Chase: Special box tops day scheduled for March 4. 1^st, 2^nd, and 3^rd place prizes will be awarded to classrooms turning in the most box tops on that day. The next mailing will be 3/15 and she hopes to beat last year’s quantity of 2500.

Legislative, Lib McGowan: Committee is looking into early release procedures due to problems with last snow day. All board members should have received an e-mail from Lib with information about the National PTA Virtual Lobby Day.
