A.V. Baucom Elementary School

PTA Board Meeting

February 16, 2006

The regular monthly meeting of the Baucom Elementary PTA Board was called to order on Thursday, February 16, 2006 at 6:04 p.m. at A.V. Baucom Elementary School. Dee Connors, president, presided.

Attending were: Dee Conners, Kim Bunce, Kristin McClure, Robin Johnston, Lisa Ward, Wendy Hall, Jenny Cass, Ve-Lecia Council, Stephanie Morrison, Lib McGowan, Shannon Bowles, Nancy Cremmins, Barb Williams, Jennifer Devarnne, John Reseigne, Nada Sakher, Judy Heilsnis, Laura Godshall, Allison Connors, Karen Galey, Laura Peters, Stephanie Silk, Laurie Williams, Diane Holt, Linda Hoffert, Carolyn Sink, Betsy Bailey, Laurie Colwell, Janice Benson, Connie Cronk, and Connie Hera (?).

A quorum (20 members, per our by-laws) was established, with 22 parent members and 9 staff members attending.

Approval of Minutes:

· Minutes from the January 2006 meeting were approved as submitted on the PTA website.

Treasurer’s Report, Kim Bunce:

• The Treasurer’s report was distributed and discussed briefly.

Principal’s Report, Ve-Lecia Council:

• Dale Burns has been selected as the new Superintendent of the Wake County Public School System.
• Baucom needs a variety of supplies for its Science program. These items have been written on sticky reminder notes and posted on a white board near the school office, so that parents may take a note and send in the item needed.
• The new trailers have not passed inspection yet. The school is still working with the inspectors to make sure all requirements are met.
• The Farm Baseball League will begin practice using Baucom’s athletic fields on March 25.
• The school system is expecting to have to convert 10 to 20 elementary and middle schools to a year-round calendar by the 2007-2008 school year in order to provide spaces for all students, even if the proposed bond issue passes. If the bond issue does not pass, all schools may have to be converted to a year-round calendar.

Assistant Principal’s Report, Stephanie Morrison:

• Behavior had improved, and there has been much less bullying, since the staff presented a bullying awareness program.

Teacher Representative Reports:

• Mr. Reseigne – The 5^th Grade requests an increase from $700 to $1,000 in the budget for 5^th Grade Moving Up day this year, and also that the budget for Moving Up Day be set to $1, 000 in the future. $300 budgeted but not used from Literacy Night ($280) and Baucom Bookworm ($20) was shifted to the Moving Up Day budget for this year, and the suggestion to increase the budget for next year will be reviewed when that budget is prepared. Other fund raising efforts for Moving Up Day were also discussed.
• Mrs. Sink – About 12 or 13 parents attended the seminar on ADHD. The school is in the process of contacting Katharine Leslie to see if she will be able to present a seminar at the school again this year.

President’s Report, Dee Conners:

· The PTA would like to thank all of the parent volunteers that helped during Kindergarten registration.

Committee Reports:

· Baucom Buddies Marathon, Laurie Colwell: The race was a huge success. 94 students participated. They each received an official race number and a medal. Participating students were asked for a $5 donation this year to support the race, but the committee would like to ask that the marathon be added as a line item in the budget next year. Money left over from this year’s marathon will be donated to the PTA general fund.

· Nominating Committee, Kristin McClure: The nominating committee is still looking for a candidate for Secretary.

· Book Fairs, Kristin McClure: Volunteers are needed for the Spring Book Fair.

· Advocacy, Lib McGowan: In the latest draft of the reassignment plan, the 140 students that were scheduled to be moved from Baucom to Salem have been left at Baucom. The BesPac facility on Laura Duncan Road in Apex will be converted to a year-round elementary school. When this school opens, it has the potential to affect Baucom’s assignment area.

· Silent Auction, Barbara Williams: A list of business donations received to date was distributed. PTA members discussed altering the schedule of the Silent Auction so that it wouldn’t conflict with the 10 a.m. – noon and noon – 2 p.m. volunteer shifts at the Fun Festival, and decided to have the auction from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

· Fun Festival, Dee Conners for Carol Lalicker: Volunteers are still needed for the Fun Festival.

· Boxtops, Dee Conners for Stephanie Chase: The next Boxtop Collection day will be February 24^th.

· Author Visit, Laura Godshall: Deborah Wiles, the author of two picture books and two children’s novels, will be visiting the school on Monday, March 20^th. She will give a presentation to the students and autograph copies of her books. A form describing the visit and allowing parents to purchase books will be sent home.

· Newsletter, Nancy Cremmins: Articles for the March newsletter are due Friday, Febrary 17^th.

· Volunteers, Dee Conners for Lisa Bernhardt: The Volunteer of the Month for February is Lynda Hoerauf. She will receive a gift certificate and use of the Volunteer of the Month parking space.
