A.V. Baucom Elementary School
PTA Board Meeting
February 12, 2007
The December meeting was held on Monday, February 12, 2007
at 6:00 p.m. at A. V. Baucom Elementary. Kristin McClure, President, presided.
Attending were: Kristin McClure, Beth Roach, Wendy Hall,
Jeanne Morgan, Laura Peters, Jenny Cass, Stephanie Morrison, Jennifer DeVarnne,
Rhonda Riley, Laurie Colwell, Melissa Otto, Lib McGowan, Angela Padgett, Nancy
Cremmins, Cathy Cnare, Diann Fresa, Sheila Morin, Lisa Bernhardt, Pam Athan,
Kim Bunce
Call to order:
- The February meeting was called to order on Monday
February 12, 2007 at 6:02 p.m.
Approval of Minutes:
- The minutes of the December 2006 meeting were approved.
Jeanne Morgan made a motion to approve, Jenny Cass seconded the motion.
After a unanimous vote the minutes were approved.
Introductions: Kristin McClure
- No introductions were required at this meeting.
Staff Reports
Principal’s report: Ms. Council
- Ms. Morrison gave the Principal’s report on behalf of Ms.
Council. The following announcements were made:
- Snow makeup day will be Monday, Feb 19, 2007 for all students and staff.
- Contractors will be in next week, Monday, Feb 19th
to start installing cameras and wiring.
- The trailers will be available within the next two weeks
for Mr. Reseigne and Ms. Hoffert’s classes. There are currently 8 active
trailers and with these 2 additional, there will be a total of 10
trailers.
- The year round conversion meetings that were held on Jan
30 & 31, 2007 were well attended and very interactive as demonstrated
by a lot of questions.
- Ms Council will be working with Ms. McClure on PTA dates
(all events) for next school year.
- A question was raised on the 5th grade
transition. Ms. McGowen stated that there doesn’t seem to be any
information coming down from Lufkin regarding the transition process (both
moving up and the year round conversion). Ms. Morrison offered to get in
touch with Dr. Dingle regarding improvement on the communication process.
Ms. Blackman:
Treasurer’s Report/Budget: Kim Bunce
- Ms. Bunch reported the following financial numbers:
- Beginning cash on hand was: $15,776.62
- Balance at the end of the month was $14,429.98.
- The first box top check was received at a total of
$1,639.70
- We have received $645 so far in Bingo collections.
- Bank charges $83.95 came into play this month due to an
increased transaction amount for the month of November when the book fair
checks were deposited.
- We added an account for publicity.
- For the Baucom Buddies Marathon we have already taken in
$1156
Counselor: Ms. Sink
Ms. DeVarne
Ms. Morgan:
- Continued thanks to the hospitality committee for the
First Friday treats this past month.
President’s Report: Mc McClure
- Ms McClure reported that we elected Jennie Cass to head up
the nominating committee with a unanimous vote of 22 to 0. Her committee
will be selecting the slate for the 2007-2008 school year.
- Ms. McClure sent around a list asking us to confirm
positions that we are currently in and express our interest in holding
them next year by checking off your name and position on the list.
- Ms. McClure went to a second year round leadership
meeting. One of the key pieces of advice offered is that some schools move
to a hierarchical structure where there are more Vice Presidents with
several committee members beneath each Vice President. Discussions were
held regarding the next steps. Ms. McClure will consider all input and put
forth a recommendation at next month’s meeting.
- Ms. Cronk, the physical education teacher would like to
put a walking track around the outside of the perimeter of the property.
There is a grant that she is applying for called, Wake to Wellness. This
grant is a 30k grant that is paid in 10k increments over 3 years. She
wants Ms. McClure sent a letter of support on her behalf.
- Ms. McClure asked if anyone is interested in a “Lunch
Bunch” gathering the third Friday of every month, and passed around a sheet
for those interested in signing up.
- Mc. McClure passed around flyer introducing a PTA parent
involvement session from the NC PTA association for Feb 27, 2007 from 6:30 to 8:30. If anyone is interested they can reference the flyer for further
information.
- Mc. McClure passed around the project enlightenment
newsletter with parent class offerings.
- The following people received the “Extra” awards for this
month:
- Lisa Bernhardt for volunteer work
- Judy Ward for signs
- Ester Morris for reflections
- Nancy for receiving late newsletter articles.
- If anyone is interested in nominating someone for the PTA
awards, please see Pam Huffy.
Officer Reports
- Newsletter: Please turn in any articles you may
have for the next newsletter.
- Bingo:
- Melissa Otto reported that there are 138 people signed up
so far. Seating is limited, but please come for a great family night.
- Silent Auction: Melissa reported that she will be in
charge of the baskets. She has asked each teacher to contact their room
parent and make a basket (or two) for the silent auction. Ms. Morgan
will ask the kindergarten teachers to put a note in their classroom
newsletters to provide some context for new parents about the baskets,
the silent auction and the fun festival.
- Fall Sale: Ms. Otto discussed thoughts about how to
handle the fall sale given the year round calendar. It was decided that
we will use Innisbrook again next year and will be looking for a co-chair
with Melissa Otto.
- Jenny Cass:
- Ms. Cass has already received $10,000 in business donations.
Also, if you have any names and numbers for potential donors for the
silent auctions, either feel free to call directly or provide her the
names.
- Ms. Cass announced that Teacher’s Certificates have been
redone this year in an effort to try to take the pressure off of the
teachers. She provided some examples of services that kids would enjoy
which teachers could offer for these certificates. They include: “Freaky
Friday” where the kids in grades 3-5 teach class, homework pass, or have
administrator’s deliver lunch.
- Pam Athans, new to Baucom this year, has graciously
agreed to be in charge of the fun festival reported on the Fun Festival.
It will be held on March 17 10-2pm. Good activities are planned, Muddy
Mudcat and Wolly E bull are coming. Need adult volunteers for the fun
festival. Apex Police are going to be here with McGruff the safety dog.
We will also have a moonbounce. Chick Fil-A and Firehouse subs will be
here.
- Ms. Jenny Cass reported on behalf of Judy Ward on the
approved sign. A picture of the sign that will be going up on Baucom
campus was unveiled. Details for the cardboard signs that will be going
in the 4 open slots need to be turned in asap. The total cost for the
sign is $490.29 which will allow is the total cost for the sign.
- Ms. Cathy Cnare reported the need for a shade structure
to support Baucom’s conversion to a year round school. She is passing
around a sign up sheet for those who are interested in helping out with
pricing and investigating a shade structure.
- Ms. Riley won the door prize.
- 5th grade moving up person was not present,
Ms. Jennie Cass reported on her behalf. The teachers were asked to leave
and then the plan was presented. The 5th grade moving up is
being handled by Debra Ruff.
At 7:00 p.m. the meeting was adjourned.
