Programs

This is a complete list and description of our programs and fundraisers.  Fundraisers are indicated with the $$ symbol.

ALP and PAL Support  - The PTA provides supplies and funds for Baucom’s ALP (Accelerated Learning Program) and PAL (teacher mentoring) programs.

Apex Advisory Council Liaison - The Apex Advisory Council meets the second Monday of each month at various schools in Apex. Our liaison attends these meetings and shares the information with Baucom parents through newsletter articles.

Apex Educational Foundation (AEF) - The Apex Educational Foundation (AEF) is a non-profit volunteer organization which provides financial support, leadership and professional assistance to Apex schools through fundraising activities. Funds are used to provide a variety of curriculum materials, services, special classroom projects and equipment as requested by school principals or teachers.

Author Visit - Baucom is one of three elementary schools (along with Conn and Oak Grove) that participate in a yearly Author Visit organized by Quail Ridge Books in Raleigh. Baucom’s portion of the visit is coordinated by our Media Center Staff. During the visit, noted children’s authors give presentations to each grade level and autograph books. Past visiting authors have included James Ransome, Robert D. San Soucci, Brod Baggert, and Cheryl Harness. The PTA funds this program each year.

Awards - The Awards Committee nominates Baucom staff and PTA volunteers for the recognition awards given yearly by the Wake County PTA Council.

Baucom Beautification - The Baucom Beautification Committee organizes two Beautifications days each year, when volunteers meet to plant flowers, spread mulch, and generally “spruce up” our campus.

Baucom Bookworm - Baucom Bookworm is our summer reading incentive program. Children can participate by keeping a log of their summer reading. Those who return their reading log when they come back to school in the fall can choose a free paperback book from the PTA.

Campbell's Labels for Education  $$ - This year-round fundraiser is simple, non-solicitous and always successful. Parents turn in individual labels and committee members trim slips, count, and stack. In the past, profits have been targeted to supplement our physical education supplies, as well as other school items.

Character Education - Our PTA and school work together to encourage and award the characteristics of Responsibility, Respect, Courage, Kindness, Self-Discipline, Integrity, Perseverance, Good Judgment, and Improvement. This committee plans a recognition breakfast each month for students—and their families– chosen by their teacher for modeling the characteristic of that month. The committee also participates in Cary Towne Center’s Character Rewards program.

Cultural Arts - This committee arranges a year-long series of cultural arts performances in music, drama, and/or dance for all grade levels, as well as a week long Artist-in-Residence and Poet-in-Residence programs.

Directory - The Student Directory lists all students in the school and their phone numbers in addition to useful PTA and school information. A copy of the directory is given to all PTA members.

Fall Book Fair  $$ - For two weeks each November, Baucom holds a Fall Book Fair. All earnings go to Baucom’s Media Center to purchase books, computer equipment and/or audio-visual materials. This is a great fundraiser and many volunteers help to make this annual event a success.

Fall Fundraiser  $$ - This fundraiser provides approximately two-thirds of the funds needed to operate our programs. Families may participate by selling products (wrapping paper, etc.) from a Fall Sale catalog, or by giving a direct, tax-deductible, donation to the PTA. Volunteers help with paperwork and distribution.

Field Day - The Field Day Committee works hand-in-hand with our PE teachers to plan and organize this super outdoor end-of-year event.

Fifth-Grade Activities - At the end of the school year we send our Fifth Graders off with a bang! Activities include: a year end celebration with a special lunch, talent show, recognition ceremony, and many other fun activities. It’s called “moving up” day, and needs lots of volunteers to make it successful. Planning begins after January.

Fun Festival  $$ - The kids always have a blast, and parents have fun setting up booths, taking tickets, and selling goodies. One of Baucom’s favorite fun(d)raisers, this event is scheduled for February. The Fun Festival features food, games, prizes, and a silent auction. Committee volunteers, which usually includes grade parents, meet to organize room volunteers and games.

General Mills' Box Tops for Education  $$ - General Mills offers us 10 cents for every box top we collect and redeem through their company. This non-solicitous fundraiser runs continuously throughout the school year. Money raised through this program has been used to purchase the climbing wall in the Multi-Purpose room, and other equipment and supplies.

Health & Safety  - The Health and Safety Committee works with the school to potential safety hazards and ways to improve the health and safety of all those who attend, work at, or visit Baucom.

Hospitality  - This committee organizes several events during the year to show the staff how much they are appreciated, including a Welcome Breakfast, Christmas Luncheon, and Teacher Appreciation Week.

Kids Voting - Being part of the political process helps our children become responsible citizens. During the elections, this county wide program sponsors polling places for children—alongside the regular polls- and teaches tomorrows leaders that their vote counts.

Kids Who Care - This program is designed to introduce and reinforce good citizenship and community awareness in the students at Baucom. Students are recognized for their contributions to our community.

Legislative Liaison  - Our Legislative Liaison keeps abreast of local, state, and national laws that effect schools and children. Wake County PTA will provide legislative meetings and advocacy training.

Membership - The Membership Committee sells PTA memberships at Meet the Teacher Day, Curriculum Nights, and through forms sent home. Members of this committee work with the Directory Committee to ensure all members receive School Directories.

Newsletter - Our newsletter, The Buddy System, is sent home with students each month.  It keeps parents up to date on PTA activities.

Publicity - Our Publicity Committee ensures that Baucom events are mentioned in the local newspapers, and other media, as appropriate.

Reading Celebrations - The PTA funds quarterly assemblies organized by the Media Center to promote literacy. Students who complete their weekly Reading Celebration homework are recognized at the assemblies.

Reflections - Baucom participates in the annual Reflections contest each winter when children across the state are encouraged to use talents in four categories: visual arts, photography, literature, and musical composition. The entries are centered around a specific theme.

School Improvement Team - The state of North Carolina mandates that every school have a School Improvement Team to assure continued success in advancing education. Parents are required to assist this process as members of this team. Our representatives attend monthly meetings and have the opportunity to address areas within our school that they feel need to be changed or improved.

School Store - The school store—run by fifth graders, but assisted by the school and PTA —sells basic school supplies once a week before school.

Silent Auction - The Silent Auction is a fundraiser held during our Fun Festival. It typically raises about 10% of the PTA’s income. Items auctioned are donations from local businesses, grade level theme baskets, and teacher donations.

Spirit Wear - Spiritwear Committee members work with local vendors to select Baucom t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc. These are sold on Meet the Teacher Day, at Curriculum Night, and through order forms included in the monthly newsletter.

Sponsorship - This is a new Committee for the 2004-2005 school year. It will ensure that Baucom is registered for school support programs at local stores, such as Harris Teeter and Food Lion. It will also provide information about using these programs to Baucom parents.

Spring Book Fair - Our Spring Book Fair is held for one week each Spring. It is a non-profit, non-fundraising, Buy-One-Get-One-Free book fair offered as a service for parents buying books for the summer.

Start Up Funds - The PTA supports the teachers at Baucom by giving all classroom teachers and specialists a check at the beginning of each year. The money is to be used for materials and supplies. Teachers can also complete a form to apply for a mid-year grant of an additional grant.

Tutoring - The Tutoring Committee organizes the recruitment and training of volunteers that tutor individual students or small groups of students. Tutors typically volunteer for a half hour or hour per week, and some companies allow employees time off for tutoring. Tutoring is a very rewarding experience!

Volunteers - Throughout the school year, this committee keeps track of Baucom volunteers who can donate precious time to help out in the classroom and/or with PTA activities. It surveys parents interested in volunteering at the beginning of the year, and then passes the names of those interested on to the appropriate place.

Welcoming - With so much growth in our area, new students (and parents) are a daily occurrence. Welcoming Committee volunteers help by calling new families to say “hello” and answer any questions they may have. Calling begins in November/December and continues throughout the year.

Year End Gift - At the end of each year, the PTA purchases a gift for the school from its remaining funds. The gift must benefit all students at the school. Previous gifts have included computers, playground equipment, and a school sign. The gift for 2004-2005 will be decided upon in the Spring of 2005.
